| This is Calvary's
second year offering a structured reading and math one-on-one tutoring
program to children in the local community. Half of the students in their
program are performing below grade level in reading. In math, all the
students that entered their program last year were performing below grade
level. Their goal is to raise the reading and math scores of their
students so that they perform at or above grade level. With help, their
organization seeks to provide the children in their program with the tools
and motivation necessary to achieve escape the cycle of unemployment, and
poverty that has afflicted so many in their parents' generation. The
ability to read well, to excel in school, and the desire to learn are
prerequisites to breaking this cycle. |
Their highly
structured reading and math programs are offered on Saturday morning for
their elementary school students and on Wednesday evenings for their
adolescent students. To ensure that tutors are prepared and that students
are taught effectively, we provide excellent comprehensive training for
all tutors. Their training and their curriculum have proven to be very
effective. Thanks to the everyone's hard work, last year's students in the
program increased their reading and math levels by an average of 1.5 grade
levels, and their reading comprehension improved by an average of almost
three grade levels.

Since last year, Calvary's
program size has doubled and their need for tutors has grown
substantially. Watching a child learn to read and begin to perform
mathematical functions
that before seemed foreign to them is an amazing
experience. Please look through the
material and share the information to
your colleagues. Additionally, contact Calvary, if you
would like a member
of their organization to prepare a presentation for your group about
their
tutoring program.
