COMMUNITY SERVICE/EDUCATION:
Judith E. Ware has been an active, loyal and faithful member of the
District of Columbia Council and Chapter for over twenty years. She has
chaired different committees and participated in a variety of projects
over the years including Council Life Member President.
Judith Ware is a front
runner and go-getter. Some activities Judith has been involved in include
holding Pioneer sales and signing up new members. She went to the National
Rehabilitation Hospital to assist with their volunteer program. Using her
Telephone Company experience, she conducted a job study over several days
to determine the tasks to be preformed, wrote a training program for the
position, assisted with recruiting volunteers and held training sessions
at the Hospital to prepare volunteers for taking over the front desk
responsibilities. Judith received recognition from The National
Rehabilitation Hospital for her development and implementation efforts.
Also, as a Life Member answering a call from
External Affairs to volunteer with the D.C. Chamber Of Commerce, Judith
provides assistance with various activities such as monthly power
breakfasts and serves at other activities as requested.
Other Pioneering activities since retirement
included the following: development of a
schedule for painting maps on D.C. School playgrounds and assisting with
the painting, active
participation on the D.C. Council Beep ball Teams,
volunteering at the Pittsburgh
(PA) Pioneer General Assembly, assisting
with preparation at Brookland Elementary School for the signing of a
National Education agreement between The Telephone Pioneers and the
Department of Education, recruiting
parents of students and personal friends to assist with the introduction
of the “I Like Me Books” at Brookland Elementary School. When Judith
heard that the Woodland Terrace Community Center in S.E. Washington had
set aside a room for a library but had no books for the shelves, she
immediately began collecting books. She not only collected and donated
enough books for the library, but she provided so many that additional
shelving had to be built. Judith has had the
responsibility as Chapter Chairperson of the “A Book About Me” project
since 2001.
Attack on America, September 2001 – Judith
Ware was one of the first volunteers to step into action. She felt the
need to contact the 3 local schools, Leckie Elementary, Ketcham Elementary
and Backus Middle School that had
students and teachers who lost their lives on the plane that
crashed into the Pentagon. On the one
year anniversary of the disaster Judith contacted the schools again to
continue the Pioneer efforts in building memorials and supporting the
school’s needs.
In 2002 Judith was introduced to a new
community service project called a “Vial of Life”. Immediately Judith
volunteered to Chair this new project for the Chapter. Most recently, she
was sponsored by the AGB #15 to walk in the Avon Breast Cancer’s 3 day, 60
mile walk from Frederick, Maryland to Washington, D.C. She finished the
walk and including the Pioneer’s pledge, raised over $5,200. In August
2002 Judith walked 25.7 miles for the annual American Foundation for
Suicide Prevention, raising $1,945 for this important cause.
AWARDS: For her ongoing efforts
Judith received AGB’s Life Member of the
Year Award in June 2000. Judith has received several other
community services awards such
as the one previously mentioned from The
National Rehabilitation Hospital. In 2003 Judith received a Certificate
of Appreciation from Brookland Elementary
School for her involvement with “A Book
About Me” and other community projects at
the school.
OTHER: Judith has supported the
following Chapter projects: Santa Bell,
the Annual Easter Egg Hunt for the
Visually Impaired, serving food to the
needy at the Covenant House, and AGB #15
Reads Day. She recruited five schools for
our second Annual AGB #15 Reads Day held on March 18, 2003.
Since retiring in 1991, Judith has become an
avid traveler, especially her yearly train trip across country.
